Irie Rock’s Pure Coconut Sensation Body Scrub Review

Bath and Body, Skin Care - - November 30, 2017

It’s been a long day.  You’ve managed to break a sweat in the hot Jamaican sun and when that finally mixes with your choice of lotion, it can become a pretty sticky mess at the end of the day.  What better way to unwind and cleanse after a hectic day than with a moisturising body scrub.  Locally made, Irie Rock’s Pure Coconut Sensation Body Scrub is a blend of Sugar, Coconut oil, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, and other natural ingredients that help the skin and its cells to thrive.

What can these ingredients do for me?

Sugar body scrubs are always more ideal than salt scrubs, for example, since sugar particles are finer and would less likely leave microscopic scratches on the skin.  Moreover, sugar is a natural humectant and does a good job of attracting the moisture in the air and keeping that hydration within the skin.

What are the skin benefits of coconut oil?

Another ingredient, coconut oil, is a natural moisturisers.  Coconut oil goes the extra mile with its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties to ensure that once the sugar crystals remove the surface dirt, the skin and its cells can be stripped of any micro-bacteria.

What are some skin benefits of cocoa butter?

Cocoa Butter’s antioxidant property is known to fight free radicals that bring about ageing, dull skin, and dark patches.  It goes further to offer deep moisturization since it is high in fatty acids.

All these ingredients combined ensures that the skin will gain and retain all the moisture possible, making it possible to have silky smooth skin even if you shower/ have a bath with hard water (water with a lot of chlorine).

For those of us who are looking for a product to provide both moisture and a cleanse,  this product is definitely a must since it does all the aforementioned and has a very neutral and ‘quiet’ scent.

What are you waiting for? ’Tis the season for silky soft skin that’ll pair nicely with your Christmas air chilled blankets.

HEMPZ PRODUCT REVIEW + GIVEAWAY

Bath and Body, Skin Care - - November 10, 2017

‘Tis the season of giving and I have just the giveaway to make the upcoming Christmas season even more memorable. I want to give one blessed reader the chance to win a product from the Hempz  Pure Herbal Extracts Vanilla Plum line.  Continue to read for a review of the line’s sugar body scrub.

The Hempz Vanilla Plum Sugar Body Scrub is amazing and then some ! It’s like a magic potion in a jar.

When I opened the 7 oz jar, there was a little oil on the surface hinting to me that they’d actually infused an oil into it – quite possibly hemp seed oil (nature’s great source of natural proteins, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals). I gave the mixture a quick stir, and on my damp face I’d applied it. It felt similar to how sugar would melt on your tongue. It was warm.  As I rubbed it in the sugar particles went to work with exfoliating and gently scrubbing my skin – nothing painful that felt like gravel on my face.  The product is made to exfoliate and polish the skin.

CONFESSION ! I’d tasted just a little to see if it was actually sugar and not a sugar substitute, and heads up , it’s the real deal. It tastes sweet.

The product doesn’t lather per se but it works well with the water to give even distribution.

The Sugar Body Scrub contains the perfect duo; the sugar gets off the dirt and the other oils that’s in this great mix imparts and locks in so much moisture.

It common for me to have a shower and race to my room to get some lotion on my skin before I turn into an ash ball. I can usually feel the chlorine in the hard water drying out my skin as I shower.

This time, I had a shower first so I could get the best out of the scrub. With my skin feeling dry and tight already, I applied the scrub and I must say it transported me somewhere else. I felt like I was in a spa getting a sweet, relaxing pampering. The smell of the scrub was so present yet so subtle.  Even after I came out the shower, I was able to take a cool stroll to my room because I’m telling you … it felt like I’d already gotten and locked in all the moisture my skin needed.

I had to immediately document my experience. I didn’t want you guys to miss a beat of this great stuff. I somehow felt like I didn’t even need to lotion because my skin just felt naturally content with its moisture level. And I’m telling you !! I’d be ashy grey as if I’d been kicking a bag of flour had I not used this.

It didn’t feel oily but my skin felt succulent, soft to the touch, thoroughly moisturized but not dripping in oil like a festival or French fry. I’d recommend this to anyone !

It was made to exfoliate and polish and it does EXACTLY that. Even my palms felt moisturized. It’s great for use before bed so you can feel smooth against your cool and refreshing bedsheets during the Christmas season.  This product will make the perfect gift for you or any loved one you have in mind.  You can check out and purchase Hempz Pure Herbal Extracts products at any Fontana Pharmacy location or visit fontanapharmacy.com.

Have you tried any of the Hempz products before?  Would you like to?

WEDNESDAY WELLNESS: TREAT OILY SKIN NATURALLY

Bath and Body, Bright Ideas - Fontana Beauty Expert - February 19, 2015

Oily skin is a pain! I have suffered with oily skin for as long as I can remember, despite having clear skin. Yes, I know they say people with oily skin age slower. However, no one wants to deal with their face looking like a disco ball by lunch time.

Oily skin can be a result of a number of problems be it genetics, hormonal, seasonal or poor use of skincare products.  Now, there are a couple skin care myths I must dispel for your own good before we talk about at home remedies.  The first being- washing your face a million times with a harsh cleanser.  This will over dry your skin and have the adverse effect where your skin will actually produce more oil.  I would recommend a gentle oil free face wash.

The second would be not moisturizing. This is a no go.  Oily skin does not mean you don’t need a moisturizer, you do.  Just choose one that is oil free, simple.

Now that we covered those myths let’s move on to at home fixes for oily skin. My go to cure is at home face masks.  I’ve recommended a few of my favs in a previous post.

My go to mask to target my oily t-zone is an egg yolk mask.  I just use one egg yolk mixed with corn starch and honey.  I usually go in with my homemade toner which consists of ¼ cup of raw apple cider vinegar, ¼ of distilled water and a few drops of tea tree oil.  I then follow up with an oil free moisturizer.  Another important step is to exfoliate the skin.  This helps to unclog your pores which help to eliminate excessive oil production on the face.

Also be reminded that your diet is also important to the condition of your skin.  Therefore, your need to drink more water, avoid oily food and exercise…

Lovelies, let me know how these tricks and tips work for you…

Until next time…Stay gorgeous…

WEDNESDAY WELLNESS: Health and Beauty

Bath and Body, Bright Ideas, Makeup, Skin Care - Fontana Beauty Expert - January 22, 2015

My Jamaican Honey

Ok, so by now you would have realized that I have a kick for natural skin care remedies.  I have tried high end skincare brands, drug store brands but I always gravitate to natural skin care products.  One of my favourite skin care luxury is the raw Jamaican honey.  There is none like it.  It helps to heal my break outs with its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.  But my favourite way to use our Jamaican honey is to make my own face and body scrubs and masks.

For my face and body scrub, I usually combine Jamaican brown sugar and Jamaican coffee with the honey.  The honey moisturizes and heals; the brown sugar exfoliates and the coffee doubles as an exfoliant and an anti-aging ingredient.  This scrub is great for improving the overall texture of your skin.coffee_scrub

I also love to use honey for masks.  My lemon and honey mask leaves the face so smooth and glowy.  It’s pretty easy to make. Just get a fresh lemon, squeeze about a ½ tbsp. and combine it with a 1 1\2 tbsp. of honey.  You can grate some of the lemon zest and add it to the mixture if you so desire (Skip this step if you have sensitive skin).  This mask helps to treat dark spots and evens out the skin tone.

All the products mentioned can be found at Fontana and in your kitchen…so go on and get creative with your skin care…Until next time stay gorgeous…..

TUESDAY TUTORIAL: Cleaning your makeup brushes

Bath and Body, Makeup, Skin Care - Fontana Beauty Expert - January 21, 2015

Ugh! I don’t know  any makeup artist who enjoys cleaning their brushes…it’s just not fun. However, it is extremely important for us as makeup lovers to take the time to clean our brushes thoroughly at least once per week.  Hey, hear me out for a sec.   Would you continuously use a dirty wash rag covered in makeup to wash your face for weeks on end? Exactly.  Think of your makeup brushes as a wash rag that you use to cleanse your face.  If you do not wash and disinfect your brushes, bacteria will build up and this could lead to major skin problems.

There are a few easy ways to clean your makeup brushes without breaking a leg…I usually mix anti-bacterial liquid soap or baby shampoo with olive oil or coconut oil.  The oil helps to break up the products that are trapped inside the bristles of your brushes and keep them soft and moisturized.  Some people even use alcohol to help break down excessive products in their brushes.  All these products are available at your beauty hub, Fontana Pharmacy…

Here is a quick video demonstrating how you can clean your makeup brushes quick and easy…

How to clean your brushes

Ok my lovelies, don’t be lazy…clean those brushes…Until next time, stay gorgeous…

THURSDAY TRENDS: The Nude Lip

Bath and Body, Hair - Fontana Beauty Expert - January 16, 2015

Nude Alert!!!

So, its red carpet season and we’re all oohing and awing over the latest fashion, hair and makeup worn by our favourite celebs.  One beauty trend that has stuck out to me this red carpet season is the Nude Lip.  Whether it was matte, glossy, satin or sparkle, nude lips were everywhere.  L’Oreal Paris beauty survey on the night showed that 60% of lipstick shades were nudes.

As a woman of colour, I know too well how difficult it can be to find that perfect nude that is not too ashy or too brown.  L’oreal and Revlon both carry a great variety of nudes to suit women of colour. My favourite is the Loreal Colour Riche in nude ballet and Revlon’s lip butter in brown sugar.  There are also more affordable options.  What I do sometimes is to line the entire lip with a nude pencil topped off with a clear gloss.  L.A. colours and L.A. girl have a variety of nude lip liners; my faves being auburn and spice.

Choosing your nude lipstick is like choosing your foundation shade.  Always pay attention to the undertones in your complexion.  For example, if you are of a fair complexion with pink undertone you would want to opt for a nude lipstick with a duty pink undertone.  If you are medium to tan complexion you can go more for a caramel coloured nude to complement your yellow undertone.  Always remember to match the undertones in your complexion and you should be fine.image (1)

Body Acne

Bath and Body - Fontana Make Up Expert - June 23, 2014

Though we often think of acne breakouts as a facial issue, for those who struggle with blemishes on other parts of their body, such as backs, neck, thighs, or buttocks, they know all too well how frustrating this can be. Regardless of where a blemish occurs, the same solutions that apply for breakouts occurring on your face apply from the neck down, too:

  • Do not use bar soap or cleansers–the ingredients in bar cleansers can clog pores
  • Do not use abrasive body scrubs (acne cannot be scrubbed away)
  • Use a gentle cleanser that’s water soluble
  • Apply a well formulated exfoliant with salicylic acid to acne and breakout-prone areas
  • Follow the exfoliant with a topical disinfectant that contains benzoyl peroxide
