New Squiggly Brows Trend: Are you Feelin’ It?

Bright Ideas, Makeup - - September 19, 2017

Perfectly sculpted brows have taken over the modern day era by storm.  Thread-thin brows are a screaming no-no in today’s fashion realm.  Creating the perfect brow with everything from spooly brushes to eyebrow pencils and concealer, has become a daily routine for millions of women.  I should know, I’ve seen my sister draw hers on in traffic.  Perfectly shaped brows have been around for some years now, and it’s only natural that women have begun to experiment on different techniques and styles, and have ultimately evolved the brow game.

Take a look at these wavy brows that blew up the internet last month.

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the new brow craze.  Many people are annoyed the length at which the people are going with makeup art, others have a light attitude towards it and others are on the fence.

I think it’s okay if the person is doing it as a look for their youtube channel, trying out their craft or just for the fad fun of it.

HOWEVER, I’m tellin’ you, if this was to be an everyday look … I’m gonna be screamin’ and running in the opposite direction of anyone I see with it.  Can you imagine someone with those brows coming up to you asking you for directions or for a phone call?

I’m one of those person’s that’s on the fence.  It’s kinda hard to hate and argue negatively at such artistic precision but at the same time, it gives me the creeps if I look at it for more than 4 seconds.  Imagine my cringe while I wrote this article.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s photoshopped.  Check out these other eyebrow trends that’ll make you do a double take.

How about this one?

And this edlekarna.cz..

But wait …  There’s more.  This image seriously acts on my trypophobia (fear of tiny holes and clusters) .  I look at this image with one eye closed and the other squinting.

How do you feel about the new trend?  Have you given it a try?  Let us know in the comments below.

Slay with Revlon ColorStay

Makeup - - September 13, 2017

Everyone knows that your makeup look is simply incomplete without a pair of perfectly sculpted eyebrows. Imagine beating your face with eye shadow blended to the gods, contour on ten and wing liner so precise with two untamed eyebrows… dreadful image right? I know. Luckily Fontana has you covered with the Revlon ColorStay brow pencil.

With a twist-up (no sharpening needed) design and attached spoolie brush for grooming and blending, this inexpensive brow pencil has a soft texture that allows for subtle or rich color, depending on how much pressure you apply.

The product’s thick angled tip makes outlining the brows easy and makes filling in them in a breeze. While the bristles of the brush are perfect for cleansing the brows and does a great job of brushing off the excess product

The pencil claims to be waterproof and is able to last for up to 24 hours which I’m sure us beauty junkies can appreciate in Jamaica’s humid tropical island weather. After passing the water test and it holding up throughout the day, I was shook!

Variety: The pencil is available in a variety of shades including, Soft Brown, Dark Brown, Blonde, Auburn and Soft Black. This makes it that much easier for everyone to find their perfect shade match.

Convenient: Say goodbye to the days of struggling with sharpening your brow pencils. The convenience of the twist up packaging is perfect for travelling for all my jet setter babes.

Texture: The brow pencil is soft and creamy, it isn’t waxy like some eyebrow pencils. This makes it easy to apply because you can control the application and get just the right amount of product in order to make hair like strokes to achieve a natural defined brow. This makes it so beginner friendly its almost unbelievable.

Shade: The shade ‘Soft Black’ is not actually black, but is grey in colour which is perfect for dark black brows that gives a feathered natural look

Price: The price point is BEYOND affordable

How I use and staying power: To use, firstly comb your brows using the brush on the other end and then use the angled brow pencil to line your brows and fill it in. After filling it in use the brush again for a well-groomed look. Then you can go in with some concealer to clean it up and viola! your brows are SNATCHED.

Overall Revlon gets a round of applause for this product so I suggest you don’t waste anymore time. Get it in store now at your nearest Fontana Pharmacy or visit us at www.fontanapharmacy.com to have your eyebrows snatched and slay with Revlon ColorStay.

Perfect Your Pout With Milani’s Amore Mattalics

Makeup - - July 21, 2017

It’s the farthest thing from pretty and can often ruin your snatched makeup look. Dried, cracked or peeled matte lipstick can have you running for the nearest water cooler or even eyeing your coworker’s fried chicken ! – Anything to get some moisture back in your lips or some sort of grease to help you fill in the pieces of the cracked mess that’s just happened on your lips.

This type of lipstick can make or break your evening. Most times while wearing a matte lip crème you’d find yourself having to reapply, and the more you reapply is the more likely that the formula will build up on the lips, further drying them out.

Luckily! Miliani cosmetics supports all our glow-ups and has done some serious time in the lab. Their Amour Mattalics Lip Crème line was clearly created with our slay and comfort in mind.

But let me save you time of reading through heavy paragraphs to find out why you should try this matte metallic lip crème.

  1. It’s super LIGHTWEIGHT.  If you’ve tried mattes before you know it has the potential to give some unwanted weight to the lips.  With this lip crème however, you can move through your evening and totally forget it’s on.  Perfect for girls or date night: you can confidently drink, eat and laugh the night away.
  2. It’s very MOISTURISING.  Say goodbye to pruny, dry lips.  This carefully thought out formula will coat your lip with all the moisture it needs to carry you throughout your day.  No more dry lips to ruin your snatched look.
  3. It DOES NOT PEEL. I think that speaks for itself.
  4. It’s actually METALLIC.  No more promises of a metallic shine only to end up with a dull shimmer.
  5. The COLOUR POPS.  Just one or two swipes and you’re out the door.
  6. It’s LONG-LASTING. Less trips to the bathroom to apply equals more time having fun.
  7. The COLOURS RANGE. Variety is everything! Especially in lipsticks.  From nudes and browns to pinks and purples.  So many great options to choose from.  The model below is award winning MUA Keneisha Bryan and she’s rocking Raving Matte.

Most importantly, Fontana Pharmacy’s got you the PRICE hook up!

You’ll be able add some of these mesmerising metallic mattes to your lip collection at a price that won’t break the bank.  Visit the nearest Fontana Pharmacy or go to fontanapharmacy.com to grab one for yourself.  No more dry, cracked, chipped or peeled matte lips.

Giveaway! Say Bye-bye to breakage and split ends with Mama’s Best

Hair - - July 20, 2017

Continue reading to find out how YOU could WIN a set of Mama’s Best hair products.

What are your initial thoughts about using Jamaica manufactured hair products in your hair?  Would you go for a Shea Moisture or a Kurlee Belle before you’d think to put Jamaican made stuff in your hair?  Do you think Jamaican made product can give strong competition to Cantu?   What is it that might turn you away from the good ole’ Jamrock products?  Is it the local packaging?

Well let me tell you … One day, I had every intention of snagging myself a Shea Moisture Leave in Conditioner, however, I was a few (a lot of) dollars short.  As I headed out the door, my eyes caught the Mama’s Best Hair Strengthening & Moisturising Cream.

I’m not gonna lie, I was skeptical to pick it up, but having read the ingredients, benefits to my hair, and most importantly the PRICE TAG.  I went for it.

joanne

LET ME REPORT TO YOU GUYS … IT’S BOMB.

That product had me shook.

totally shook

Before using the product, this is the amount of hair I lost on wash day; so this is the amount of hair I’d lose daily.

wash day hair loss

Fresh out of the shower, I massaged about two “bottle cover sizes” of the Hair Strengthening & Moisturising Cream into my 3b/3c hair, and as it dried I just couldn’t keep my hands out my hair.  My hair was as soft as a freshly washed and fabric softened blanket.

I doubted its ability to make my hair soft because although it’s a cream, it’s watery.  This is simply because it’s a water based cream and a lot of its ingredients are herbs, and natural and essential oils such as castor and rosemary.  I knew my hair would have shine because of the oils, but when oil is mixed with wet hair it usually feels and looks stringy and often results in crisp, dry hair.

Don’t be alarmed by the watery consistency; remember it’s a daily moisturizer. Heavy dreams aren’t the best to apply on a daily basis because it can’t work into curls effortlessly, and often disrupts the curl pattern making it more likely to go stale and frizzy. A watery product will move around the curls and be absorbed far easier; imparting moisture the hair would need to be refreshed and appear visibly soft.

For the relaxed mama’s out there, this would be good as a weekly moisturiser to work in the hair when you’ve just washed it.

It far exceeded my expectation to impart moisture and just be good at all. I couldn’t keep my hand out of my hair because it.

My hair didn’t break nearly as much anymore and I was able to see my hair growth; (I bleached my hair right to my scalp so I can easily see new growth, so you must know I’m telling you the truth.  I also only used the product 3 times out of the 7 day week).

On its own it gave me very conditioned, shiny curls that had bounce and hold.  I would not use it as a styler, but definitely as a leave in.

curls with mamas best

It’s purpose is to repair and help growth so I know it would be good for guys as well.

This collection of hair is not just for wash day, but for the entire week …

hair loss for entire week

Yeah. I found it hard to believe myself.  I had to try it again to make sure I wasn’t the bearer of false news. . . And I got similar results the next week.

Why wouldn’t you chase after an all natural, affordable and performing product?

Here’s why you should try the new Kurlee Belle line

Hair - - July 19, 2017

Do you ever get that feeling? The one where you just wanna try a new product for the sake of discovering if it’s gonna work wonders for your hair? Well that was me over the weekend. I managed to snag two products from the Kurlee Belle It’s only Natural, hair line. Below I’m going to review how their Kurl Defining Crème worked on my 3b/3c hair and how the Jelle Coconut Styling Gel worked on my friend’s 3c/4a hair.

Kurlee belle line

Firstly, the packaging is very simplistic, and might even mislead a curly girl into thinking that its content would pale in comparison to a Shea Moisture or Cantu. The packaging uses hot pink, white and teal to make up the very minimalistic label. It, nonetheless, served its purpose to call forward the kinky, kinky curly and curly hair types to nourish themselves in a product that aims to de-frizz, moisturize, soften, define, and elongate curls.

When you first open the jar, a subtle, coconut fragrance unfolds before you. It’s so gentle; it’s almost hard to pinpoint the exact tropical aroma that tantalizes your nostrils. On the first day, the scent tended to linger, ensuring that its pleasant presence was known. Its consistency is smooth, lightweight, soft and almost fluffy, which made it easy to distribute and incorporate into the hair. While applying the product, I noticed it left a sort of oily remnant on the fingertips, signaling to me that it was going to do wonders with moisturizing my bleached and colour treated hair. After applying, although defined curls were formed, it made my hair feel stiff and hard when it was dry which raised a red flag for me.

6

The next morning, however, the gel cast or ‘crunch’ had been broken. My hair had much more volume, visibly softer and tight curls, it was soft to the touch, and overnight the fragrance had become fully acquainted with my hair and it was no longer a scent that lingered but it had fully become its own warm, summer day, tropical festival.  The product helped the red colour in my hair have shine and vibrancy.

I would give this product a strong 7/10 mainly because I would have loved to see it help clump my curls more. It ranks up major points in its subtle smell, ability to moisturize and give the hair a lot of shine.

For someone with the 4a – 4c hair type, this product surely has the consistency and ingredients to impart moisture.  It would be great for making twist outs, and bantu knots without the crunch and with lots of shine.

The Jelle Coconut Styling Gel, on the other hand, is formulated from 100% coconut oil, which might explain why it has a faintly less perfumed fragrance than the crème, and has a more natural undertone. As for its consistency, it has a little more movement than the Eco Styler Gel, in that it was marginally less heavy and thick; this made it easy to distribute throughout the hair.

7

Being that I’m not a fan of gels, I tested it on my friend who has 3c/4a hair. The product quickly mingled with her raw, kinked mane perfectly, using its ingredients to clump her hair into the most beautiful curls and coils without the need for water. The product definitely delivered on shine and hold.

For her hair, I would definitely give this an 8/10. Points were lost because unlike the crème, the styling gel did not impart as much moisture into the hair, leaving the hair with a crunchy appearance. To fix this, a few drops of the Kurlee Tropical Oils Blend will add moisture and extra shine – especially for my the 4 hair ladies.  However, if I’m to be honest, we were a little heavy handed with it, and since gels are not particularly for moisturizing purposes, too much of it made her hair hard and dry; less is more.

Do you think you’d give this product a try? Have you ever used these or any other products from the line? Comment down below and let us know !

HAIR TREND ALERT ! AFROCENTRIC BEADED BRAIDS

Hair - - July 18, 2017

It’s starting to take social media by storm this summer ’17.  Time to throwback and get groovy again with this very afro-chic 80’s inspired look.

The look generally consists of one or two ‘cornrow/cainrow’ plaits on each side of the head, beginning the plait at midpoint and ending towards the front of the head.

look #1 @imadamejay

The hairdo definitely gained more traction after American pop singer, Alicia Keys debuted with the look on May 1st.  Since then, many naturals worldwide have drawn their own inspiration and have taken their own unique spin on the infamous look.

alicia keys @aliciakeys

alicia_keys 90's

It can be left plain, and be a statement in itself, or you can dress it up with antique or shell beads, braid cuffs or your favourite headband.  This is definitely a functional hairstyle where you can look stylish and keep cool during summer’s heat waves.  The braids can pair perfectly with your bantu knots or twist outs.

look #2 @nenny_b

kyla  @kotton.x

The look seems to be very time appropriate as the hairstyle is nothing new to the African American community. These types of statement looks were often used throughout the 70’s to 90’s by African Americans as a means of rebelling against the Eurocentric times they found themselves in.

Africa hairstyles

These hairstyles were a mark of pride and unity; a way to stand out and embrace the culture.  This is precisely what we’re doing again today in the African American circle, with our movements to love and accept our colour, hair and culture.  Of course much of these intricate designs developed out of Africa where these women style their hair with these complexed patterns as a means of tribe identification, ritual, social position, wealth, marital status.  These patterns are often handed down from generations.

You can be a part of something great.  Join the expression and unity.  Give the style a try and stop by Fontana Pharmacy for the best hair accessories to slay this look.  Also, use #FontanaBeauty under your hair inspo pic to get featured on our social media !!

GIVEAWAY!! Get juicy, moisturised lips this summer with revlon kiss balms

Makeup, Skin Care - - July 14, 2017

It hurts.  A LOT … when you mistakenly grin, when you lick it or even when you drink.  It’s enough to make a tear trickle down your face from time to time, and can be quite unattractive.

Chapped, cracked lips … the official sign that it’s summer or winter.

raven

Dry lips can often make you regret all the times you took its moisture for granted.  Chapped lips are as a result of lessened humidity in the air.   This is particularly the atmosphere during winter and summer.  Studies show that prolonged exposure in the sun will heighten one’s likelihood of getting chapped lips – but that’s pretty much expected.  Additionally, because the lips do not have oil glands, persons often lick them to replenish the moisture, however, this is one of the main culprits of the dry lip problem.

But the folks over at Revlon’s got you covered.  They’re aware of the yearly struggles that the lips go through so they’ve recently introduced their Kiss Balm line.

revlon-kiss-balms-1

Six tropical, fruity flavours designed to provide lasting hydration with a pop of colour.  Give your lips a coat of Juicy Peach, Crisp Apple, Tropical Coconut, Fresh Strawberry, Sweet Cherry or even Berry Burst.

I picked myself up a Crisp Apple at Fontana Pharmacy and I’m ready to tell you wassup !!

revlon crisp apple

When I removed the cover, the kaleidoscope of scents that rushed towards my nostrils reminded me of a cherry lollipop I use to eat as a child.  However, when I gave it a second whiff , the aroma overtook my senses and tantalised my nostrils with a scent very similar to the apple Jolly Rancher; forcing my taste receptors to remind itself of the sweet and sour flavour that the popular sweet would give.  If I’m being honest, I was actually moved to give it a quick lick.  Beware !! It does not have the same taste.

The fragrance doesn’t just unfold and linger in the space around you.  It transfers onto your lips so you could actually smell it on your upper lip especially.  Don’t worry, it’s nothing that’s obnoxiously loud that’ll cause you to sneeze.

smelling

When my friend had smelt it herself, and had seen me applying it; she was already sold and was anxious to get her hands on one to call her own.  One of her main concerns was the consistency.  She’s very heavy handed and wanted to know how it felt after several applications.

I must say, the product is lightweight and went on like my lip was a hot skillet and the balm was butter.  With just two swipes my lips instantly felt smooth and soft.  You could possibly forget that you’re wearing it.  Even with dozens of applications (because I tried it) it does not weigh down the lips to the point that they begin to feel numb.  It did not feel heavy or sticky and was actually rather comfortable.  The image below is about ten swipes.

Lip tester

With each swipe the hue that is deposited gets more pigmented but not to the point that it is overpowering.  It resembles the look that a lipgloss would give.  The gloss isn’t enough to blind a person who’s 1 mile away nor will it make you look like you just ate fried chicken.  Perfect for the minimalist woman – hydration and colour.  It can also couple as a base for your favourite matte lipstick.

Get Juicy, Kissable Lips this summer ’17 !

For a chance to win your favourite Revlon Kiss Lip Balm and a Revlon makeup pouch, simply comment below and name all six flavors of the Kiss balms.  Entries end on Sunday 16th at 11:59pm.  Feeling lucky? You could be one of six winners.

5 Beauty Tips You Need To Survive Summer ’17

Bright Ideas, Skin Care - - July 11, 2017

It’s summer time ! So you know what that means.  Bikinis, brunches, beaches and parties!  Of course, that also means the searing sun, acne flare-ups, dry skin, and chapped lips.  No need to fear.  Below are a few tips and reminders for you to consider this summer season.  LET THE SUMMER BEGIN!

confetti

  1. Coconut oil can be used as sunscreen.  Studies have shown that coconut oil has the SPF power to block up to 75% of the sun’s radiation.  This is ideal since it can keep your melanin poppin’, and goes further to give the skin loads of health benefits.  Additionally! It costs way less than sunscreen and can be used in the hair and can even be used to fry some yummy chicken legs for the family barbecue.  This product is way more than a simple 2-in-1.  It’s an everything in one.  From the pool to the family barbecue.sharon feanny coconut oil
  2. Drink more water to reduce oily skin.  The skin has certain mechanisms in place to help protect the body from bacteria and other microscopic invaders.  One of the natural protectants that the skin produces is sebum.  For some of us out there, our sebaceous glands tend to kick things into overdrive and cause ‘oily skin’.  However, before we go pointing fingers at sebum, ask yourself ‘am I drinking enough water?’  When dehydrated, the body is prompted to produce more oils, hence ‘oily skin’. Of course, this may not be the case for everyone, and some of it can actually be linked to genes.  Try to cleanse [the surface of the skin], tone [cleanse beyond the surface to the pores] and moisturise [to replenish the skin’s moisture].  Nonetheless, it’s good to chug a few glasses of water throughout the day to keep hydrated, especially in this summer sauna.
    jesse pinkman
  3. Exfoliate the lips.  That glaring summer sun …  it dries out more than just the skin.  The sun and particular dry summer atmosphere has the ability to strip the lip of its moisture, causing dry and cracked lips.  OUCH!  Don’t forget to EXFOLIATE. Fontana beautician Danielle Jones, explains that it is important to remove the dead skin from the lips to allow new growth.  Try using the Revlon Kiss lip balm as a moisturiser for the lips. P.S. look out for an upcoming review and giveaway on that. (Spoiler Alert, it smells and feels great).
    revlon-kiss-balms-1
  4. Jergens lotion is NOT for the face.  Yeah, I know.  I was shocked too.  Danielle warns that although the face is covered by skin, using lotion as its daily moisturiser can predispose one to breakouts, especially in the summer heat.  Try using an actual moisturiser instead.
  5. Use moisturisers with glycerin, shea butter, stearic acid or ceramides.  These ingredients are known to give rich moisture to the skin.  However, if you can’t get your hands on any of these, some good ol’ petroleum jelly will do the trick to replenish the skin’s moisture. With all these tips,  where could you go to find the right products to help you this summer? Stop by the nearest Fontana Pharmacy or visit fontanapharmacy.com.What are some of your beauty tips? Comment below and let us know!

One of Jamaica’s best MUA’s Rise to success; Keneisha Bryan’s Story

Makeup - - July 10, 2017

We’ve all done it. Yeah I’m including you. WE ALL have done it … When we were tiny toddlers, as a teenager, in the beauty salon, heck maybe even inside Fontana.

That’s right. At some point or the other we’ve all flipped through beauty magazines and have marveled at the masterpieces that were created on someone’s face. It’s amazing the things you can create with so little space, on such different textures and shades. It truly is a transformation. Some may even go further to think ‘I wish I could do that ‘ and possibly even attempt to.

One particular young lady was immediately mesmerized and drawn to the makeup artworks that she saw in magazines. Keneisha Bryan recalls the moment she discovered just how much makeup could do.

She says, “I always saw how beautiful and flawless the girls were, and I always wondered how and when I’d be able to look like that, even at a young age”.

She was further baffled when she realized that it was someone’s master and crafty manipulation of temporary makeup that made the flawless looks.  ‘How did they do that?’ She’d ask herself.

Determined to find out and experience it for herself, Keneisha went out and got her first weapon for battle, an eyeliner. With this she set out to conquer her eyebrows, but often found herself in trouble for wearing ‘makeup’ at school since at the time she was only 14.

Today, many may look at her technique and precision in awe; but like all great things, it did not happen overnight.  During the interview she recalled some of her first time looks; below being one of them.

keneisha's before

It took her about a year to work up the courage to practice makeup on someone besides herself. After that, she went to the Heart College of Beauty Services for two years to not only get the practice and theory of cosmetology, but to also become certified.  Perhaps having art as a subsequent hobby helps her steady hands get those snatched and sharp wings.

Keneisha eye look

Can you tell the cut crease is her absolute favourite? It goes without saying that every good artist has a muse and inspiration, Keneisha particularly draws hers from Wayne Goss, and Jackie Aina.

For the past 5 years, the award winner has pushed through the negativity pelted at her and has created a successful, independent practice where she specializes in makeup and beauty.

Keneisha's MU work              Keneisha's MU work 2

She still reminisces and chuckles at her beginnings when she’d charge $1000 JMD (INCLUDING TRANSPORTING FEES) for a makeup look.

Keneisha urges that while the makeup craft may have its downside, if examined from another perspective, one would clearly see the confidence boost that makeup can give to a woman. It helps her to demand attention when she walks in the room; and while some may sum this up to be arrogant, it nonetheless makes the woman more comfortable.

While the beauty and glam aspect of makeup is the most eye catching, Keneisha leaves a some words of advice for aspiring MUAs, “Don’t just learn the practical; get some theory in. It’s useful, especially when clients asks for suggestions and advice. With everything that you do, you need to have background knowledge of it; understand the reason behind it. [You should] be able to add aftercare recommendations, especially if you see them [the client] with minor skin issues .. ”

To the makeup naysayers, Keneisha just has one thing to say, “not because you don’t like something means you must automatically bash it. To each their own.”
