OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFun Trends: Pastel Hair for Spring

A new season is upon us and I’m sure most of us will be making some changes.  I’ve decided to ditch my dark locks and go for something lighter.  Spring is the perfect time to experiment with your hair because the weather is not too hot or too cold.  It’s the perfect time to start over.

One trend I’ve noticed dominating the beauty scene is the pastel ombre and I love it. Mind you, I don’t think I’m brave enough, but, it’s a great way to push the envelope and have a bit of fun. The good thing is that you can opt for a lighter or darker pastel shade with highlights or ombre, to your liking. The most popular is the Kylie Jenner green pastel hair colour. I have to say I am tempted to try. Hey, if you don’t want to colour your hair, you can always opt for extensions. Either way, have fun with it.

Now, before you decide to colour your hair please ensure you consult a professional to assist with colour selection and advice on how to use the product.

Fontana carries a wide range of hair products in store and online to include L’Oreal, Dark and Lovely, Nice n’ Easy and Garnier…go check them out.

Okay my lovelies, colour your Spring with lighter shades and have fun with it…until next time, stay gorgeous

WEDNESDAY WELLNESS: Get rid of dry dull hair

Bright Ideas, Hair - Fontana Beauty Expert - February 5, 2015

Get rid of dry dull hair…

Nobody wants to have dry dull hair, it’s not cute.  I coloured my hair recently and I noticed that two days after washing my hair, it would appear so dull and dry.  I consulted my hair dresser and did a little research of my own and concluded that my hair was lacking moisture, and need lots of it.  Being the frugalista that I am, I tried to find affordable ways that worked to address my dull dry hair.  Some products I found in my kitchen, others I found at the beauty hub, Fontana.

Based on my research, I decided to make a couple hair masks. I knew I needed to add some protein to at least one of my treatment mask.  The first mask I made I used an egg, an avocado, mayonnaise and some olive oil. I applied the mask to my hair, used a steam cap to cover it and left it on for about 30 minutes.   My hair was so soft and shiny after.

Hair mask 1

The second mask I made was the real deal.  I used Jamaican castor oil and coconut oil, melted Shea butter and honey; left the mask on for about an hour each time. Listen, this little concoction worked miracles. I used this mask once per week for four weeks and my hair has never been better.  My hair has transformed into a shiny, bouncy goldie locks and I’ve never been happier.  The castor oil adds so much body while the coconut oil and Shea butter gives my hair the shine and lustre it needed.

Lovelies, I strongly recommend you try some of your own at home remedies and share in the comments section. I mean who doesn’t want gorgeous hair without breaking the bank?

Until next time, stay gorgeous…

THURSDAY TRENDS: The Smokey Eye

Bright Ideas, Makeup, Skin Care - Fontana Beauty Expert - January 22, 2015

So, last week we looked at how the nude lip took over the red carpet this season.  This week the focus is on the eyes.  Smokey eyes were a huge deal this red carpet season.  L’Oreal Paris beauty survey showed that 60% of eye makeup at the recent Gold Globe awards were smokey eyes. This would explain the correlating nude lip; as is standard smokey eyes are usually pared with a soft nude lip.  However, a new trend that I’ve been seeing and I LOVE is to pair the smokey eye with a bold lip. Yes, it is out of the box and No, it is NOT for everyone, but hey, give it a go.

My favourite way to pair a smokey eye with a bold lip is to create a bronze smokey eye with red or berry lips. Call me a vixen, but I LOVE it! If you’re not as brave, you can always opt for a more neutral smokey eye to pair with a bold lip.  Remember makeup is about experimenting and having fun; it’s really not that serious.

How to make the smokey eye work for you?

Less is more.  Always start off by using less product and build up the intensity as you go along.  Another key step is to blend…blend and blend some more.  Selecting shades that complement your skin tone is also important.  As makeup artist, I find that adding a warm transitional shade in the crease and along the lower lash line creates a sultrier and flattering look.

Overall, for me, mixing cool and warm shades adds dimension to any smokey eye look.  If you are just getting started with makeup, I would recommend you start with a neutral smokey eye and work your way up to a more intense look.  Maybelline The Nudes eye shadow palette is great for this.  You can go from an everyday look to a dramatic eye look.

Ok my lovelies; today I challenge you to be bold and smoking with your makeup.

Until next time…stay gorgeous…

TUESDAY TUTORIAL: Make Your Eyes Pop

Bright Ideas, Hair, Makeup - Fontana Beauty Expert - January 13, 2015

The eyes are the windows to the soul, so make them POP!!!

This winter we have seen on the runways big bright eyes paired with bold lips.  You can achieve big sexy eyes with a few simple steps and tools.  All you’ll need is mascara, eyeliner, a highlighting pencil and an eyelash curler.

For mascara, I would select the following because they lengthen and adds volume without clumping.

Maybeline New York Volum’ Express Pumped up Colossal mascara

 L’Oreal telescopic  mascara

For eyeliner, you can choose between a gel liner and a pencil; whichever you are comfortable with.  I would definitely recommend the following:

Revlon Colorstay creme gel liner – easy to apply and lasts all day

Nanacoco mechanical pencil  – very creamy, smudges easily into the lash line to create a smokey effect.

For highlighting the water line and brow bone, I would recommend Milani’s Shadow Eyez pencil for its creamy consistency and blendability.

For all the products listed, don’t forget to visit your one stop beauty hub…Fontana Pharmacy

Here is a tutorial demonstrating how you can achieve bold eyes without lash extensions.

Until next time, stay gorgeous…

xoxo

L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Extraordinaire Liquid Lipstick

Bright Ideas, Hair, Makeup - Fontana Beauty Expert - December 21, 2014

The liquid lipstick is housed in a gold tube packaging with a colored band along one side of the tube so one can identify shades easily. The bottom part of the tube is colored as well so if you store them upright in a stand, you can still locate shades quickly. The applicator wand is smooth and soft with a smooth fine tip so application is easy and precise. You can use the tip of the wand to clean up the edges while applying. The texture of this lip color is slightly on the thicker side but it doesn’t feel sticky at all. It goes on really smooth on the lips (almost jelly-like smooth and cushion-y!), adds a lovely shine with medium color coverage and plenty of moisture. It is supposed to contain micro oils that nourish and soften the lips making it perfect for the colder season and for dry lipped ladies.

L’Oreal-Paris-Extraordinaire-by-Colour-Riche-Lip-Colour

Unlike some of the other liquid lipsticks I’ve tried, this does not dry out the lips or cling to the dry bits. I experienced slight unevenness with the palest color but the other shades wore very smoothly. The wear time is good for a product with this kind of texture and varies with each shade (brighter/deeper shades wore longer). Overall, I really like these and the wearable colors + softening, moist formula makes me reach out for these again and again.

Until next time toodles 🙂

A Quick Makeup Tip: For Fiery Red Lips, Set Boundaries

Bright Ideas, Hair, Makeup - Fontana Beauty Expert - December 18, 2014

Red lips, like fire, are hard to contain. They’re also hard to resist. Every gal I’ve ever known has wanted to wear red lips at one time or another. Even my staunchly anti-makeup BFF, who will get in her car and drive 50 miles away from me if I approach her with a lip brush, craves crimson sometimes.

Red lips, like fire, are hard to contain. They’re also hard to resist. Every girl I’ve ever known has wanted to wear red lips at one time or another. Even my staunchly anti-makeup BFF, who will get in her car and drive 50 miles away from me if I approach her with a lip brush, craves crimson sometimes.

One trick to controlling the fiery power that is red is containing it within a boundary, like by lining the edges of your lips with lip liner. For a defined, distinct boundary around your red, use a liner shade slightly darker than the red lipstick you plan to apply, then fill your lips with the same liner, except for the middle of your top and bottom lips (to create subtle variations between the color in that middle area and the other parts of your lips for extra dimension).

Now, soften any harsh edges with a lip brush, while keeping that open area in the middle of your lips clear for the next step: your lipstick.

Layer the lipstick you’ve chosen all over your lips now, and blend it seamlessly into your lip liner.

Whoop! Contained, defined, fiery red lips. Ooh-la-la.

Until next time … Be BOLD!

Brown Lips are In!

Makeup - Fontana Beauty Expert - December 12, 2014

In the ’90s we were used to a defined brown lip liner that looked anything but natural, but now we’re filling our entire lip in with a sultry brown shade for the perfect winter, deep and dark, edgy look.

beautyrecipe_articleBy now we’re sure you’ve noticed that the brown lipstick trend is back, and better than ever. In the ’90s we were used to a defined brown lip liner that looked anything but natural, but now we’re filling our entire lip in with a sultry brown shade for the perfect winter, deep and dark, edgy look. While a brown lip may sound intimidating, it’s actually one that anyone can pull off, and below, we’re showing you how.

Mascara: Since brown lips are so bold, we’re keeping things on our eyes simple. Skip the shadow and winged liner, but don’t forget the mascara. Apply a few coats of your favourite volumizing mascara to help accentuate your natural lashes and open up your eyes.

Lip liner: Before you go digging in the bottom of your old makeup bag for your brown lip liner, remember we aren’t time traveling back to the ’90s just yet. Instead, opt for a nude lip liner, like L.A. Colors Chunky Lip Pencil

By outlining your lips with the nude liner then also filling them in, you’ll be toning down the natural pigmentation of your lips so the brown lipstick will show true to color, while creating a base for it to stick to so it stays put all day without feathering or bleeding.

Brown Lipstick: Now it’s time for the fun part: the lipstick! Instead of applying the lipstick straight from the tube onto your lips, use a lip brush for a more precise application. For the perfect deep brown lip, we’re currently loving REVLON Colorburst Lip Butter, Brown Sugar
